When sitting around the dinner table, how many people in your home have devices (cell phones/tablets/TV) accessible? How many would be willing to take the #DeviceFreeDinner challenge? The challenge is to get the whole family to turn off their devices and focus on a conversation without the disruption of social media, email, etc. Often times this challenge is hardest for the adults sitting around the table. Learn more about the #DeviceFreeDinner and sign up to take the challenge (http://sl.psd401.net/devicefree). Make technology the conversation point. Ask your kids questions about how they use the technology they have access to, or explain to you why you should be using a certain app or website. Some questions that you could ask include:
- What is Snapchat or Instagram and why should I use it?
- When on social media, how do you know who you interacting with an acquaintance rather than a catfish?
- What type of abbreviations or acronyms do you use while texting or on social media?
- How do you use technology for learning?
Empower your children to find the balance between media and undistracted face-to-face time!
