People of Peninsula: Keri Rogers
I was born and raised here in Gig Harbor and am a graduate of Peninsula School District schools. It was in the 2nd grade, in a classroom at Artondale that I first dreamed of being a teacher. It was my teacher who inspired me. I remember sitting in her classroom and thinking to myself, “I want to be just like her someday…” Even as a 2nd grader, I saw that there was something special about her and the way she made us feel. I was amazed at how she made her classroom so inviting and warm, how she made learning so fun, and how each student felt as if they were the most important person on the planet. With ingredients like these, learning abounds.
As I moved on into middle school, high school, and into college, everything I did was centered around my dream of one day being a teacher. After graduating, working with an international non-profit, and teaching on the east side of Seattle for a number of years, I felt a tug to come back “home” to Gig Harbor and plant roots here. I felt another even stronger tug to work in Peninsula School District, as a way to serve this community that had given so much to me along the way.
Now, I’m a teacher at the same school where my dream began, hoping that I can inspire the next generation to achieve their own dreams – whatever those dreams might be. After growing up here in the Harbor and then spending some time out in the world, I’ve realized that we have a big, wide world out there with lots of opportunities to dream and to make a difference. For me, as a teacher, I get to show kids the world around them. I get to help kids identify their strengths and passions. I get to encourage kids to dream and to pursue those dreams. What a gift to be able to do this back in the place that had first done that for me!
