Dear Vaughn Families,
It’s hard to believe that December is upon us. November flew by and I would like to recognize a wonderful performance by Mrs. Mills and our third grade classrooms at the Veteran’s Day musical. Our dancing classrooms performance was last weekend and our 5th graders placed third in the “Colors of the Rainbow” performance. What an amazing job they have done! Our 2nd grade students will be performing a concert during the day this upcoming week at 1:40pm and in the evening at 6:00 pm on December 13th, called “Stars, Smiles, and Songs.”
Many of you have noticed that I have been out the last two weeks. I did not want to be away, but was caring for my mother and then grieving her passing during this time. She was an inspiration to me and helped me foster a love of teaching. I appreciate the warm welcome and kind remarks as I have returned. It was difficult to be away and I am glad to be back into the routine, supporting our students here at Vaughn. Thank you to Martha Arneson who was in charge in my absence as well as Dave Colombini, John Selfors, Kimberly Marinelli and Jim Rudsit who came in as a substitute Principal to support our staff and students.
Each year we focus on School Improvement Goals. This year our goals include an English/Language Arts goal, a Mathematics goal, and Climate and Culture goal. Our focus is to ensure that all students meet or exceed the rigorous standards for their grade level. Our School Improvement Goals are available on our website.
First trimester report cards go home Friday, December 14th. Please take some time to sit down with your child and discuss his or her progress. This is a great opportunity to discuss what strengths your child has, in addition to areas for growth, create a plan together for maximizing success in the coming months. By reviewing the report card together, your child knows that their school success is important and valued. If you have questions about your child’s progress, please feel free to contact the classroom teacher.
It has been quite cold this past week and it is predicted to be a dry and cold winter. As we head into break, please have your child wear a jacket and appropriate shoes each day. If we are indoors for recess this decision is based on whether the rain is bouncing off the pavement.
Our lost and found is overflowing with coats, hats, jackets, gloves, and other winter items. If you know of a lost or misplaced item, you may want to check the lost and found at Vaughn. Twice a year we donate any lost and found items that are not claimed to local charities. We would much rather see those items go home with their original owners. We will encourage students to look through the lost and found before they leave for winter break. We also invite families to take a look for those lost items as well.
Did you know we have weekly spirit day at Vaughn? Every Thursday is “Husky Pride Thursday.” Students can wear Vaughn spirit wear or our school color of purple. Also, every Friday during football season is “Blue Friday,” wear gear to support our Seattle Seahawks. This Friday, December 14th, students are encouraged to wear a hat for the all school Hat Day, a reward the students have earned over this first Trimester. Additionally, we will have our Husky Pride Awards assembly on December 14th at 9:15am.
