Open Enrollment Numbers at the Aviation Academy at Henderson Bay for the 2025-2026 School Year:
If you are interested in joining the Aviation Academy at Henderson Bay, it is beneficial to submit your enrollment application as we do have student moves throughout the year and will use our waitlist to fill vacancies.
Powerschool, our district enrollment data system, has a platform that allows school districts to run a lottery. Using this platform allows us to keep all student data centralized and allows us to more easily align and vet the data being presented for the lottery. Due to its automation, it leaves less room for error and supports our front office with the clerical work to ensure we get students properly enrolled in a timely manner.
Families will express interest in the Aviation Academy at Henderson Bay using a modified enrollment form through PowerSchool
The Aviation Academy and PSD will communicate updates regarding the Enrollment process through multiple avenues, to include Social Media, Website, ParentSquare Groups, and ParentSquare messages to currently enrolled secondary families. Do you know families interested in attending the Aviation Academy that are not yet connected to PSD? Please encourage them to follow our social media accounts and join our mailing list for most update to date information on enrollment.
We will accept enrollment based on proportional rates from each of Peninsula School District’s residential schools. The purpose of this is to avoid impacting some neighborhood schools disproportionately by students moving to Pioneer.
We will be monitoring student program placement following Board Policy 3130: In-District Student Transfers. For example, we will be monitoring capacity in our special education and related services during the enrollment lottery, ensuring adequate space, staffing, and support for students in those special programs.
Who can apply for the Aviation Academy?
The Aviation Academy is open to all students residing within the Peninsula School District and attending any of our comprehensive high schools: Peninsula High School, Gig Harbor High School, or Henderson Bay High School. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in Peninsula School District schools, either as full-time or part-time students. The program welcomes students from all backgrounds and encourages those with diverse academic or extracurricular interests to apply. Participants will maintain part-time enrollment at their primary high school while attending the Aviation Academy for three sections.
Is there a priority system for specific students?
No. All applicants, including children of district staff, go through the same unbiased lottery system. Everyone has an equal chance of being selected.
Are students with IEPs, 504 Plans, or Highly Capable designations eligible?
Yes. The Aviation Academy is inclusive and designed to support all students, regardless of their academic or support needs. The program team will work with families to ensure the necessary accommodations are in place.
What happens if I’m not selected in the lottery?
Students who are not selected will be placed on a waitlist. The waitlist is managed transparently, and families will be notified if a spot becomes available. Clear timelines and expectations will be communicated during this process.
What transportation options are available?
Transportation needs will be assessed during the registration process. Families can indicate if they require district-provided transportation, and the academy will work to accommodate these needs wherever possible.
Can I participate in sports or other extracurricular activities while enrolled?
Yes. The Aviation Academy is structured to allow students to remain active in district-sponsored extracurricular activities, such as sports, arts, and clubs.
Can I do Running Start and the Aviation Academy at the same time?
This depends on scheduling. Students interested in combining these opportunities should work with their school counselor and the academy registrar to determine if it’s feasible within their schedule.
What if I have a part-time job?
The program is designed to be flexible for students with part-time jobs. Families should discuss scheduling needs during the enrollment process to ensure conflicts are minimized.
What if I don’t have enough credits to graduate on time?
Academic counselors will work closely with students to create personalized plans that align with graduation requirements. This may include supplemental classes or alternative schedules to help students stay on track.
The Aviation Academy prepares students for careers such as piloting, aircraft maintenance, aerospace engineering, air traffic control, and other aviation-related roles. Through hands-on learning and industry partnerships, students gain valuable exposure to real-world aviation environments. Learn more about potential aviation careers at FAA Aviation Careers.
Students in the program will have opportunities to earn certifications, such as private pilot ground school credentials or introductory aircraft maintenance certifications. These certifications provide a foundational step toward advanced aviation training. For more details on aviation certification pathways, visit the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).
Homeschool students may be eligible to participate in the Aviation Academy, depending on district policies. To explore your options, contact the registrar at Henderson Bay or review the district’s homeschooling guidelines at Peninsula School District Homeschooling Resources.
