Dear Peninsula School District Families and Staff,
|
Did you know that gold is one of the most malleable metals? A single ounce can be stretched into a thread over five miles long! This flexibility and resilience make gold a fitting symbol this school year.
As we enter this new school year, with the vibrant colors of fall beginning to emerge, I am reminded of the Olympic spirit—the relentless pursuit of excellence, determination, and teamwork.
Just as athletes go for the gold, our district is committed to reaching new heights and achieving excellence in all we do. As I begin my fourth year as your superintendent, I am filled with optimism and excitement for the opportunities ahead.
Together, let’s embrace this season of growth and strive for greatness, supporting each other every step of the way.

Staff Take Safety and Security Training
|
Our focus on safety remains a top priority headed into the new school year. In August, our staff was privileged to join other local school districts at Lumen Field for an intensive “Stop the Bleed” training. This important training, along with our Safety and Security Administration Training Day last month, strengthened our efforts to provide a safe and secure environment for all students and staff.

PSD's CTE Program Takes Flight at Airport Day
|
The Airport Day event was such an incredible experience for our community, and Peninsula School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) department truly shined! Families, students, and community members had a blast visiting the CTE booth, where our talented staff and students showcased the wide range of programs we offer. One of the highlights was the Minecraft Coding e-sports table—students and visitors dove into the world of coding while competing and learning together. It was inspiring to see the excitement on their faces as they engaged in these hands-on experiences.
Our CTE booth was packed with interactive activities and fun giveaways, emphasizing just how important practical, real-world learning is. It’s always wonderful to see our community come together for events like these, where students can explore their passions and our programs can make a lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who stopped by! We can’t wait for next year.

I am excited to welcome this year’s outstanding group of new teachers, administrators, and classified staff to PSD. Their enthusiasm and expertise will be sure to make an impact on our students’ lives, and look forward to seeing the positive influence they will have on our schools. This is why we wanted to highlight them with gold medals at our staff Welcome Back event on Wednesday, August 28.

PSD Board of Directors Passes the 2024-2025 Budget
|
I’m pleased to announce that our district’s budget for the upcoming year has been successfully passed. This budget reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the resources necessary to support high-quality learning environments across the district.
Some highlights of the new budget include:
- The General Fund, which covers day-to-day operations like classroom instruction, transportation, food services, athletics, and administration, has a total revenue of $159.7 million, with the majority coming from state apportionments ($94.5 million) and local taxes ($27.6 million).
- The 2024-2025 budget includes an increase in classified staff (support roles like paraeducators, clerical, and maintenance) of 20.65 FTE, mainly due to the recall of previously laid-off positions.
As we head into this year, we are committed to reaching new heights and achieving "gold-standard" success in everything we do—from academics to community partnerships.
Thank you for being a part of this journey and supporting our students and staff as we work together to create a district that shines bright. Let’s go for gold this year!
Sincerely,
Superintendent Krestin Bahr

Join PSD for an Important Discussion
|
The "Facing Fentanyl" event is a community-focused town hall discussion about the impact of fentanyl in our local area. The event will take place at two locations:
-
Gig Harbor Civic Center – October 7, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 PM.
-
Key Peninsula Civic Center – October 21, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 PM.
Both events will feature a town hall-style conversation with local experts, including representatives from the Peninsula School District Opioid Task Force, local fire departments, police departments, the sheriff’s office, and treatment centers like Crossroads Treatment. Following the discussion, breakout sessions will cover key topics such as talking to kids about fentanyl, community safety, and treatment options.
Attendees will also receive free life-saving training and Naloxone (Narcan) kits (available for the first 100 attendees), with the goal of increasing awareness and response capabilities around fentanyl overdoses. The event is sponsored by organizations including the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor, the Pierce County Health Department, and the City of Gig Harbor.
