Important Update for Families
Please join us in recognizing our Varsity Letter in Community Service recipients at the June 9, 2026 School Board meeting.
Engaging in community service is a meaningful way to uplift others, strengthen the community, and grow personally. The impact students make through service can have a lasting effect on those around them while also helping students develop important skills such as relationship-building, empathy, problem-solving, and leadership.
PSD is proud to honor students who contribute to our community through the Varsity Letter in Community Service program. This opportunity is available to students entering grades 9–12 and may be earned each year throughout high school.
We look forward to celebrating these outstanding students and their commitment to serving others.
What Is the Varsity Letter in Community Service?
Since 2017, Peninsula School District has honored high school students who volunteer their time and talents to uplift others in our community and region. In the 2025-2026 school year, we had 198 remarkable students who earned the Varsity Letter in Community Service. These students have dedicated nearly 21,000 hours of service to organizations, including Food Backpack for Kids, Tacoma Rescue Mission, school events, and Point Defiance Zoo. These students completed at least 100 hours of community service and maintained a 2.5 GPA or above.

VARSITY LETTER IN COMMUNITY SERVICES 2026 – 2027
Engaging in community service is a way to uplift others, the community, and oneself. The impact on the lives of others and the community at large can be lasting. It is also a great way to enrich your skills at relationship-building, empathy, problem-solving, and leadership. Peninsula School District is proud to honor students who contribute to our community with the Varsity Letter in Community Service. This opportunity is available to students going into 9th through 12th grade and can be repeated through each year of high school.
REQUIREMENTS
Each student will be required to sign the agreement (outlining the guidelines for submitting volunteer hours). These guidelines will be sent to the student the week of June 22. Students should read over the guidelines and requirements and then sign the agreement form attached in the email.
- 2.5 or greater cumulative GPA at the end of 1st semester of the 26-27 school year.
- Complete at least 100 hours of community service between June 15, 2026 and May 31, 2027.
- At least 25 hours of the 100 must be completed within Pierce County.
All volunteer hours must be submitted through the Student Volunteer Hours Tracker App using the link provided. Hours entered in School Links are not valid and will not be counted towards the Varsity Letter in Community Service Program. Click this link to access the Student Volunteer Hours Tracker App link
As you complete volunteer service, please enter each volunteer occurrence separately in the tracker app. Do not combine multiple volunteer events or dates into a single entry. Each occurrence must be recorded individually and include all required information outlined in the program guidelines.
Once you have accumulated 100 approved volunteer hours, you will qualify to receive a Varsity Letter (first year) or a pin (subsequent years of participation).
Students who participate in the Varsity Letter in Community Service program for all four years of high school and meet the 100-hour minimum requirement each year will receive an honor cord to wear at graduation.
Please review the program requirements and guidelines carefully to ensure your volunteer hours qualify and are entered correctly.
Once you have entered your hours and reached at least 100 approved hours of service, no additional action is required on your part. Program coordinators will review records and determine eligibility for recognition.
Thank you for your commitment to serving our community.
