Voyager Joins Oregon & Washington Farm to School K-12 Institute

Voyager Elementary is proud to announce its selection as one of 10 teams to participate in the 2024-2025 Oregon and Washington Farm to School K-12 Institute. This year-long professional learning experience supports schools in integrating farm-to-school programming, focusing on building lasting relationships and actionable plans to enrich student learning with fresh, locally sourced food.

Voyager’s team, which includes educators, administrators, and nutrition services staff, attended the Farm to School Summer Institute in Silverton, OR, from July 8-10. This opportunity allows our team to collaborate on how best to bring farm-to-school programming into the classroom, cafeteria, and the wider community.

Farm-to-school programming promotes connections between students and local food producers, offering hands-on learning experiences like school gardens, cooking lessons, and farm field trips. These initiatives empower students and their families to make informed food choices while supporting the local economy.

What Farm-to-School Programming Involves:
  • Procurement: Serving locally sourced foods in cafeterias, snacks, and taste tests.
  • School Gardens: Students engage in growing their own food, learning vital skills.
  • Education: Opportunities to learn about agriculture, health, and nutrition.

Voyager Elementary is excited to implement these programs throughout the 2024-2025 school year, and we look forward to updating our community on their progress. Together, we can create an environment where students grow, develop, and thrive. As Outdoor TK teacher Missy Northstrom says, “Our mission this year is to create a place where students can connect with each other, themselves, and nature.”
