 SEPAC-October Disability Awareness Month-Sharing Kyle’s Story

As the last of our articles for Disability Awareness Month, we highlight the story of Kyle, a free spirit who has been embraced and supported at Vaughn Elementary School. Kyle’s journey, with the help of the Options program, has been one of remarkable growth. Through the dedicated efforts of his team, he has made significant gains in communication, social skills, following directions, safety awareness, and emotional regulation. Vaughn Elementary’s commitment to nurturing Kyle’s strengths and helping him navigate challenges has enabled him to feel fully accepted and supported for who he is. This acceptance has allowed Kyle to thrive in an environment that fosters inclusion and respect.

Brianna, Kyle’s mother, shares her gratitude for the Options program staff, who have worked with all three of her children. Their open communication and unconditional support have provided her family with a sense of safety and comfort. Kyle and his siblings have developed strong relationships with both staff and general education peers, thanks to the school’s focus on inclusion. Brianna encourages other parents to ask questions and engage with the school staff, as it can alleviate the uncertainty that often accompanies navigating special education. “Your child's journey is theirs alone and is not comparable to other children’s journeys,” she reminds us. Kyle’s story, supported by inclusionary practices, highlights the power of a compassionate school community, where all students benefit from learning and growing together.

Kyle’s story showcases the positive impact that inclusion and shared experiences can have on both students and their communities. The dedication of the Options program team has helped Kyle, and many others, flourish in a supportive environment. By sharing these journeys, we can continue to promote understanding and celebrate the strengths and contributions of every student.
