Exciting News for Gig Harbor and Peninsula High School Debate Teams!

We are thrilled to announce that both the Gig Harbor and Peninsula High School speech and debate teams have qualified for the national tournament after their remarkable performances at the Western Washington National Speech and Debate Association District tournament held on March 7 and 8.

Outstanding Achievements at the District Tournament

Gig Harbor High School placed a commendable second at the regional event, just behind Bellevue High School, while Peninsula High School secured third place with only three competitors on their team. This achievement is particularly special for Peninsula, as it marks their first qualification for nationals since 2017!

Looking Ahead to Nationals

The national tournament will take place from June 15 to 20 in Des Moines, Iowa, and both teams are excited to pool their resources and travel together. Before heading to nationals, they will compete at the state tournament this weekend, March 20 to 22.

Gig Harbor coach Chris Coovert expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The students are already good friends, work together to research, and often coach each other. It will be great to attend nationals together and give the kids more time to bond.”

The following students have qualified for the national tournament and will represent their schools in their respective events:

Peninsula High School:

  • Alex S.: Informative Speaking

  • Mars B.: Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Alyssa R.: Humorous Interpretation

Gig Harbor High School:

  • Jack P.: Congressional Debate

  • Autumn C.: Lincoln Douglas Debate

  • Alaia W.: Dramatic Interpretation

  • Paige N.: Dramatic Interpretation

  • Timothy S.: Big Questions Debate

  • Kendra S.: Programmed Oral Interpretation
