Projected Growth & Industry Demand

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady demand for skilled technical and creative roles in media, entertainment, and live production through 2034, driven largely by job openings from retirements and career changes:

  • Producers and Directors are projected to grow 5 percent from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 12,800 openings projected each year.
  • Broadcast, Sound, and Video Technicians, who set up, operate, and maintain the electrical equipment for media programs, held about 146,100 jobs in 2024, including about 92,300 audio and video technicians and 12,100 lighting technicians. The field is expected to see roughly 11,100 job openings per year.
  • Film and Video Editors and Camera Operators are projected to grow 3% (as fast as average), with about 6,400 openings projected each year.
  • Special Effects Artists and Animators earned a median annual wage of $99,800 in May 2024, and despite limited employment growth, about 5,000 openings are projected each year.
