A heartwarming group photo taken in a high school gymnasium showcasing the unified spirit of Peninsula High School and North Thurston's basketball teams. Players from both teams, wearing purple and green jerseys respectively, are gathered together on the basketball court for a post-game photo. The school mascot, wearing a purple uniform, stands among the players, and the American flag hangs prominently on the wall behind them. The scoreboard and basketball hoop are visible in the background, while the polished wooden floor reflects the gymnasium lights. Students are displaying various poses of joy and camaraderie, including some playfully sitting or lying on the court.

PHS Unified Basketball Showcases Positive Impact of Inclusive Programs

Peninsula High School’s (PHS) gymnasium came alive on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with spirited competition between the PHS Unified Basketball team and North Thurston. These games exemplify our district’s dedication to inclusive education and spaces where all students can feel empowered and inspired. Unified Sports creates opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete together, fostering understanding and friendship through sports.

Our Unified Sports program is continuing to grow, with new teams and inclusive clubs from the elementary level to high school. Tuesday’s game highlighted the positive impact the program has on our entire school community. The determination and joy from both teams reminds us that when we create opportunities for all students to participate, everyone benefits.

Thank you to our Unified coaches, volunteers, families, students and fans who make these games possible. Together, we continue to create a more inclusive PSD community.
